Taught by our LCI-certified instructors, the class will cover basic skills needed to navigate local Athens roads.  Perfect for beginner riders, but applicable for all skill levels, the Confident Cycling class is designed to develop your knowledge and expertise in the craft and science of bicycling. In the classroom, we will review traffic laws and basic emergency repairs (flat tires, brake adjustments, etc…). Then we’ll hit the road to master crash avoidance maneuvers.  Other drills will refine your ability to confidently flow with traffic.  At the end of class, you will synthesize all your new skills during a short, guided group ride through town. The class will be at HT Edward educational center from 8:30am-1pm on Saturday, May 25. Please bring a water bottle. All riders will need a helmet.  If you don’t have one, let us and know and we can provide one.  Space is limited so contact us atadministrator@bikeathens.com to reserve your spot!

Celebrate Earth Day with Heirloom and The Hub Bicycles!

Join your friends and neighbors on Earth Day, Mon., April 22, for a bike ride from The Hub Bicycles in Five Points to Heirloom Cafe and Fresh Market in Boulevard.

The cycling event kicks off at 5:00pm at The Hub where you can take advantage of a free bike inspection and receive a coupon for 10% of your next purchase. Here, you will also receive a waiver to sign before the ride begins. The ride, lead by BikeAthens’ Elliott Caldwell, begins at 6:00pm when the caravan will start on the 4.7 mile bike ride to North Chase Street via the Greenway Trail.

A delicious, three-course dinner of locally sourced food will be served at Heirloom starting at 6:30pm. The price will be $25 per person, not including tax and tip. After dinner, you will receive a coupon for 25% off your next dinner, Monday-Thursday. The caravan of bikes will depart Heirloom Cafe at 7:45pm and return to The Hub Bicycles at 8:15pm.

Children’s Cycling Safety Event!

Despite Rain, Bike Rodeo Makes a Hit
ignoring the drizzle shortly after the event began, children rode their bikes with “enthusiasm.” The event was the first Bike Rodeo in Athens in years.

Promoting cycling safety, organizers designed stations and an obstacle course in the school yard of Barrow ES 2.0 to teach children ages 4-13 how to properly wear a helmet, how to give proper turn signals, how to respond to signs and how to safely negotiate rode obstacles.  ”Considering the weather, I was really pleased with the turnout and enthusiasm of the kids,” BikeAthens executive director Tyler Dewey said.  ”Even with the rain, several kids asked if they could ride the course multiple times.”

Organized by Safe Kids Athens, the Governor‘s Office of Highway Safety, Barrow Elementary School, and BikeAthens, participants earned a certificate in cycling safety by completing the planned course. 

“I’d like to thank Barrow Elementary for allowing us to use their space,” Tyler continued.  ”Janice Flory, our contact at Barrow, did a great job coordinating with us on grounds use.  Also, 3 interns, Bonnie, Tori, and Shannon from SafeKids Athens, did an excellent job bringing in volunteers and sponsors for the event,” Tyler said.
