Bicycle Recycling Program

BikeAthens’ Bicycle Recycling program, a cooperative venture with local social support agencies, distributes reconditioned bikes to individuals in the Athens community who are underserved by private and public transportation. The main role of BikeAthens in this project is to procure donated or abandoned bikes and restore them to safe and reliable working order. We will rely exclusively on volunteers to recondition the bikes.

We distribute the reconditioned bikes complete with safety gear, including a new helmet, reflective vest, lock, front and rear lights and reflectors. Each bicycle requires about 10 hours of work and costs an average of $52. We gratefully accept donations, online or in cash, to help us cover those costs. Our goal is to repair 75 bicycles this year, at least 20 of which will be kids bikes repaired in time for Christmas. For more info, see the program details.

Repair Sessions
Every Wednesday
6 - 8:30 pm

and Monday
6 - 8:30 pm

Volunteer Info:
Volunteers need not have any knowledge of bicycle maintenance; just be willing to get their hands dirty repairing, tuning up, cleaning, and outfitting the bikes. Feel free to bring your own repair stands and tools although it is not necessary that you have these items to participate.

We meet at the BikeAthens storage facility . You need not commit to all sessions, just come when you can. (directions).

Donation Info:
We accept donations of gently used bicycles. Please drop the bike off during one of our work sessions (listed above).  The average bicycle costs us $52 to repair and outfit; half of that cost is for the new helmet, lights and lock.  We are appreciative of any accompanying contribution that you can make to help us cover those costs, although it is by no means mandatory.  Donations of used locks and lights are also welcome (sorry, safety concerns prohibit us from accepting used helmets).

Recipient Info:
We do not give bicycles directly to individuals. If you are in need of a bicycle for daily transportation please contact Athens Area Homeless Shelter (706-354-0423).
